A. No, it doesn't take 8-1/2 years to graduate with a master's in architecture. The standard NCARB curriculum is 6 years for a master's. There are many fine architecture schools in your area.

What was the architecture book referenced in the movie Beastmaster?
Q. In the commentary to the movie Beastmaster, the makers reference a book called "Architecture Before Architects" They said that this is a great book, covering everything from housing to urban planning in ancient times, and had an influence on the production design. I can't find this title mentioned anywhere, and I think they may have remembered the title wrong. If any architects or architecture students are reading this, would you know what title this was? Or maybe recommend a better book on ancient architecture? Thanks

A. I haven't heard of a book called "Architecture Before Architects," and I couldn't find it for sale on amazon.com. There is a famous book called "Architecture WITHOUT architects" by Bernard Rudofsky (published in 1964) which covers some of the topics you describe (the link to its amazon.com page is below). Rudofsky also curated a show at MOMA by the same title, affirming a patronizing view of the primitive huts of the noble savage...Modernism in architecture was on its way to dying a slow death. So, I think the text and theory behind the book is pretty terrible, its probably a good reference if you're looking for a nice collection of photographs.

How did architecture during the renaissance influence us today?
Q. My i- search topic is Renaissance architecture, and though we don't need an argument, we have to compose an essay about how our topic influenced the renaissance all the way through modern day. I have researched many types of architectures during that time period, and the are outstandingly beautiful, but i don't see how they influenced anything. Does anyone know if they discovered a different material for building that we still use today or something of that nature? Any information would be very much appreciated! thank you in advance!
Asked by kk - Fri Mar 12 14:43:44 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, I don't now that they discovered any new building materials. But, the Renaissance influenced the architecture with which we use to build houses and such. The Renaissance Revival style is used in quite a few buildings from the residential to the political. It's not built that often today but a couple hundred ears ago many wealthy household used it when they built their residences. Those residences still stand, or at least most of them do. I don't know if this will help you any, but it's all I know.

A. Look into the St. Louis Arch, for one. It's actual shape is a hyperbolic cosine, also called a "catenary curve". Or maybe the Sydney Opera House? If I remember correctly, it's mathematically interesting (though maybe not as much as the Arch). Or if you want a little reading, I just searched google and found this (looks like it's about several interesting buildings in Britain):

How is architecture and landscape architecture different?
Q. I know architects work with buildings/structures and landscape architects focus more on landscape and ecological rehabilitation, but in terms of design and education, how different are they? I am looking to do an MLA (masters - landscape architecture) and was wondering if you work with sketches and models like you do in architecture. Any help and information would be greatly appreciated!

A. both need the same core education for drafting, but specialization in there field requires different classes and experiences. I.E. landscaping architect should only need a cursory understanding of building code for say kitchens but must understand how pitch and grade of a lot will effect runoff of water.

A. Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings and structures. A wider definition often includes the design of the total built environment: from the macrolevel of town planning, urban design, and landscape architecture to the microlevel of construction details and furniture. The term "Architecture" is also used for the profession of providing architectural services. Architectural design involves the manipulation of mass, space, volume, texture, light, shadow, materials, program, and other elements in order to achieve an end which is aesthetic as well as functional. This distinguishes Architecture from the applied science of engineering which usually concentrates on the structural and feasibility aspects of design. According… [cont.]

A. Most states now require NCARB certification now to become a licensed architect.. That means that you must have a degree from an accredited school and participate in the Inter Developement Program (IDP).. I would browse the NCARB website to look for your state requirements. If the requirements are not very stringent ie. you only need 4 years or experience counts towards education, then I would contact your state board directly and ask them how long the requirements will stay that way..

A. I know here in Australia it depends very much on the course content that you studied and then the professor decides. In some cases you can study post grad architecture if you have a degree in either planning/built environment/interior design

Why are the advancements of Greek architecture & sculptures important to our life and world today?
Q. I need about a paragraph or so to give me ideas of what to write on why advancements of Greek architecture and sculpting during the Golden Age (or the Age of Pericles) is important to us today. A link to a good site would be nice. If you yourself decide to write something, please add a link from where you got your information. Ten points to best answer!
Asked by Monica - Sat Sep 20 16:13:07 2008 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Well, a large amount of architecture today that is considered 'stylish' is based on Greek Architecture. For example, the British Museum uses Doric columns similar to those used to adorn the Parthenon. This is probably intended to show that the museum is a place of intellect and learning (something which relates to education, first perfected in the Golden Age). Sculpture is more difficult to place. There is the fact that Classical sculpture of the age is considered the epitome of art, and has influenced a number of artistic trends up to today.

A. Don't listen to Leo. For whatever reason we find routes into what we want in life. One way or another. You may want to apply to more than just one arch. program, since it will increase your chances (obviously) of getting in somewhere to pursue your passion. For what it's worth, I've known people to have gone to less known institutions, including jr. colleges, and end up at the most prestigious programs studying their field. e.g. an ex-girlfriend of mine has a brother who couldn't get into NYU for film off the bat so he studied for a year at Binghamton and did well, re-applied, and got in. He was very successful in completing the bachelors and works in LA now. He is also checking out UCLA's masters program. So, keep up the good work… [cont.]

What is the best type of laptop for an architecture major?
Q. I'm going into architecture this fall, and I have no idea what laptop I would need. I have yet to check the college's specs, but what's a general preference of architecture majors? PC or Mac? And what specifications? Thanks.
Asked by pu d - Tue Jun 9 12:42:22 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Go with your school's specifications. They may even ask you to purchase the computer (and the accompanying software) from a company of their choosing. Most architecture students use PCs (AutoCAD has not yet been released on a MAC). If you will be doing heavy 3d rendering, drafting, and processing, you will want decent processing power, a really good graphics card, and plenty of memory. Most students rely on a desktop for their rendering needs in studio, but also have a laptop to so they can work at home, play music, or work on other things while the desktop is processing a rendering. Good luck! Check with your school first!!
