A wider definition may comprise all design activity, from the macro-level (urban design, landscape architecture) to the micro-level (construction details and furniture). Architecture is both the process and product of planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience that reflect functional, technical, social, and aesthetic considerations. It requires the creative manipulation and coordination of material, technology, light and shadow. Architecture also encompasses the pragmatic aspects of realising buildings and structures, including scheduling, cost estimating and construction administration. As documentation produced by architects, typically drawings, plans and technical specifications, architecture defines the structure and/or behavior of a building or any other kind of system that is to be or has been constructed.

Architectural works are often perceived as cultural and political symbols and as works of art. Historical civilizations are often identified with their surviving architectural achievements.

Architecture sometimes refers to the activity of designing any kind of system and the term is common in the information technology world.

A. No, it doesn't take 8-1/2 years to graduate with a master's in architecture. The standard NCARB curriculum is 6 years for a master's. There are many fine architecture schools in your area.

What is the difference between architecture and interior designing?
Q. I like to design buildings. i.e, paint, furniture, the shape of the building etc. So which one of the two involves the above mentioned? For which do we have to study a lot? Is architectural engineering more difficult than medicine? If i opt for architecture, will it be stressful later and will i have no free time? In architecture do we have to travel to different areas or just make the construction as a drawing?

A. It sounds as if you would like interior design better. It is more about actual design, harmony, color, shape...etc. Architechture involves a lot of math and techinical things. Structural aspects of building, the surrounding environment, people building for (and a lot more things). In my school, architechture is one of the hardest majors, right up there with medicine. It is INTENSE to say the least. You have to really love it to do it, and later on in life there is a high possibility that you wont become an arcitect. Probably depending on what you do, you will have to travel. If you really want to be an arcitect, is it essential to travel and look at the site. If you're planning on slacking in college, and do not want tons of… [cont.]

What is the best architecture books for a student?
Q. I want to do an independent study in architecture in high school, but I have no idea where to start. What would be a good textbook or something to start with? I've searched around, but I've only found a bunch of fiction books or essays by architects. These are nice, but I really need clear, concise information. Any good suggestions?

  • The art of dancing stands at the source of all the arts that express themselves first in the human person. The art of building, or architecture, is the beginning of all the arts that lie outside the person; and in the end they unite.
  • Architects know that some kinds of design problems are more personal than others. One of the cleanest, most abstract design problems is designing bridges. There your job is largely a matter of spanning a given distance with the least material. The other end of the spectrum is designing chairs. Chair designers have to spend their time thinking about human butts.
