South America (Spanish: América del Sur or Sudamérica; Portuguese: América do Sul; English: South America; Dutch: Zuid-Amerika; French: Amérique du Sud) is the southern continent of America, situated in the Western Hemisphere and mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a relatively small portion in the Northern Hemisphere. It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean; North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest. America was named in 1507 by cartographers Martin Waldseemüller and Matthias Ringmann after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the lands newly discovered by Europeans were not India, but a New World unknown to Europeans. South America has an area of 17,840,000 square kilometers (6,890,000 sq mi), or almost 3.5% of the Earth's surface. As of 2005, its population was estimated at more than 371,090,000. South America ranks fourth in area (after Asia, Africa, and North America) and fifth in population (after Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America). From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Where in South America should I take my holiday? Q. I'm planning to visit South America this year for the second time round. I've been already to Brazil & Argentina (loved them!), and I would like to visit another country which is equally as developed as those two, both commercially and with regards to western hotels etc. (ie, NOT Bolivia =). Any suggestions? Asked by guarapple - Tue May 26 21:34:43 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Colombia. Go to Bogota, Cartagena. Cali and Medellin. Once there, I plan having about $1500 to explore with and when the money runs out I will return home. Has anyone here done anything similar to this? What advice do you have regarding places to visit, how to get there, etc, keeping in mind my limited budget. Thanks! Asked by abax86 - Wed Jun 24 00:32:50 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Try working in youth hostels, while you stay there, in Peru this option should be available most of the times. Things to see and do, well this depends on your preferences, most people are totally into Machu Picchu, I preferred doing a three day rafting trip in a canyon for about one third of the money... Try to get how much some things cost, a friend of mine payed way less than other people. Bargain, bargain and try to group with people who are good with that. The most interesting country I visited was Bolivia, it is the most adventurous and also one of the cheapest countries. Be careful with the food and water though.
